How it all began
Mary Stahr (Harris) Powers is a retired English teacher with a pronounced aversion to grammatical errors on public signs. She does not hesitate to call the phone numbers on billboards to correct their grammar and spelling.
As a joke, Neal wrote a short story named 'Millie's Honor' about just such a teacher. When a trusted friend read it, she insisted the story be expanded into a novel. That's how it all began.
You can actually read the short story yourself. It is now the last chapter of Neal's novel, 'Millie's Honor.'
